Walden Lions Club & Walden Youth For Youth Clean-Up Old Creighton Rd!

The Walden Lions Club members & the Walden Youth For Youth made a great Team on April 22!

We completed the Old Creighton Rd Clean-up- picking up 30 bags of garbage - among other things like a gas tank!

We would like to thank Councilor Barbeau for the pizzas!

Now the Old Creighton Road looks much better. We hope the people of Lively appreciate it.

Walden Youth for Youth Are Going Full Force!

During March & April our WYFYC youth will be busy with preparation of resumes and cover letters, daily job searches and practicing interview skills in anticipation of summer employment. 2009, 2010 volunteer experiences by many of our youth at WYFYC not only has helped our community but it can also be included on their resumes: fundraising for the Lion’s Club Christmas Telethon, our Shoveling for Seniors Program and helping at the Walden Winter Carnival, etc.

“…We would like to take this time to thank our youth for their generosity and enthusiasm while they are out in the community donating their time to such great causes. We are proud of each and every one!”

June Epple , Susi Knezaurek, Coordinators- Walden Youth for Youth Centre

Walden Youth for Youth has had a very busy winter season thus far. They have been involved with fundraising for the local Lion’s Club Christmas Telethon and raised $400.30 in their second year of support. They were pleased to travel in the Mayor’s bus to deliver their donation on Telethon Night, thanks to Councillor Jacques Barbeau.
The Walden Youth adopted 10 grandparents for the Christmas season and treated them with chocolate drizzled spoons, hot chocolate and candy canes. They presented the Christmas treats in Christmas Mugs wrapped nicely in cellophane and ribbons.
Councillor Barbeau treated the Walden Youth group with a special Christmas dinner and came in to surprise them with chocolate treats! A huge thank you goes to Councillor Barbeau from the teens at the Walden Youth for Youth Centre for his continued support in all of their endeavors.
Several youth from Walden Youth for Youth have had the fortunate opportunity to receive complimentary training in Facilitative Leadership thanks to Stéphanie Chevrette. (Regional Coordinator, Young Community Leaders Project, ICA Canada/YMCA Employment Services.) Thank you Stephanie, the certificates and skills that the youth obtained through this training will prove to be instrumental tools in their life journey.
Walden Youth have also resumed their shoveling for seniors program. Most of our youth are under the age of 17, meaning that they don’t hold a permanent valid driver’s permit. This puts some limitations upon the programming when it comes to servicing seniors in need who are out of walking distance from the Youth Centre location located on Kin Drive. We are located in the lower level of the Community Service Centre, on Kin Drive.
It would be greatly appreciated if everyone could pool together and work on this project assisting our seniors in the Walden area. I am requesting that anyone who is available to help contact me so that I can prepare a list of volunteers.

Walden Youth For Youth ...looking for Community Partners to help Seniors in Walden!

This is the second winter that the Walden Youth for Youth have been volunteering their time within the community offering a free shoveling service to seniors. This program has branched off into raking for seniors and gardening for seniors during the spring, summer and fall months.

Most of our youth are under the age of 17, meaning that they don't hold a permanent valid driver's permit. This puts some limitations upon the programming when it comes to servicing seniors in need who are out of
walking distance from the Youth Centre location in the lower level of the Lively Community Service Centre, on Kin Drive.

It would be greatly appreciated if everyone could pool together and work on this project assisting our seniors in Walden communities - which our WYFY volunteers are unable to reach.

ie) We recently received a request re: snow removal from a senior living in Whitefish and it was too far for our volunteers to walk to.

I am requesting that anyone who is available to help please contact me so that I can prepare a list of volunteers who would be willing to help fill the gaps for these shoveling services for seniors in Walden communities. If you are available to help with our raking and gardening programs which run in the summer and fall, please indicate that as well.

I thank you all in advance,

June Epple, Coordinator

The Walden Youth for Youth

…Are back in session full force!

Programs such as Photography, Music/Guitar, Art & Crafts, Sewing, and Cooking are all under way.

Our youth are preparing for the winter season and you can look forward to the Shoveling for Seniors Program this winter. Our local youth will donate their time-which will result in volunteer hours towards their high school credits, or you can pay them for their services, the choice is yours.

The Walden Youth for Youth are interested in creating a new program this winter called "Adopt a Grandparent." Several seniors in Walden can expect something special for Christmas!

Our youth have also expressed an interest in Caroling to raise money to donate to the Lion's Club Christmas Telethon again this year. Last year the amount donated from the Walden Youth for Youth was approximately $360.00. A huge thank-you goes out to the Walden Community for opening their doors and pocketbooks last season-which made the donation experience positive for our youth. We look forward to singing to the Walden residents once again during the week of November 23rd through to the 27th.

This Christmas we would appreciate donations to the Walden Youth for Youth that would compliment our programming underway. Gift Certificates from merchants such as: Walmart, Michaels, Canadian Tire would be helpful. ie Our youth had expressed an interest in knitting hats and scarves for the homeless and for babies at the hospital this season, and we would have launched this program if we had the supplies to complete the project.

We are also looking for recycled light bulbs-both Christmas and regular light bulbs- for a current project, and we are also looking for the front page of old Christmas cards.

If you have any questions, please call the WYFY Centre

Good Afternoon,

This email is to inform you that the volunteers of the Young Community Leaders project have completed their community consultation report and we would like to share our findings with all members of the community. We will be having a presentation on September 22nd 2009 at the main branch of the Sudbury public library (Mackenzie St.) from 6-7pm in French and from 7-8pm in English. At this time we will be discussing the report findings and have registration forms for youth aged 15-30 who are interested in starting their own community development projects. Please feel free to pass this information on to your colleagues. We hope to see you all there!

Looking For ‘First-Hand’ Information

…About Future Career Possibilities!

A new youth coordinated program is being created in relation to post secondary interests.  The youth have given a list of interests for future career avenues.  They will be doing research in each of the fields and booking guest speakers from those fields to come in to provide insight.  Bookings will commence shortly and will run into June 2009, with hopes of getting future contacts for the youth - for summer employment, or summer volunteer experience in their fields.

What’s Happening at Walden Youth For Youth …and How You Can Help!

Walden Youth for Youth will be fundraising this fall for the Lion's Club Children's Christmas Telethon. We will be holding a Halloween Dance where the youth will be fundraising with an admission fee to the dance. The youth will also be seen in the community going door-to- door caroling on several evenings mid to late November. Adult volunteers would be greatly appreciated for these outings.

Our youth centre can also be seen presenting their donation live on Telethon night - which will be on December 6th between 2pm-11pm at Sudbury Secondary School. We thank you all in advance for your participation in our fundraising here in Lively for this year’s Telethon!

Looking for Donations …to Help Youth Learn Music & Photography

Walden Youth for Youth Centre is looking for donated musical instruments. We are especially interested in guitars, acoustic or electric. Our youth are offering free music lessons to their peers, so we are hoping that there will be some members of the community who can support us in this youth run program.

We are also looking for donations of digital cameras or even disposable cameras so that the youth may learn some photography and media skills.

Thank you,

June Epple
