WALDEN YOUTH FOR YOUTH

Walden Youth for Youth Centre

The Walden Youth Centre would like to extend a warm welcome to all youth ages 12-18 to attend and benefit from the programs and services offered this season.  We are located in the lower level of the Citizen Service Centre.  Our hours of operation are from 2-8pm Monday through Friday.

Some of the fall/winter initiatives this year will include; a canned food drive, fundraising for the Lion’s Club Christmas Telethon, PetSave volunteerism, Adopt A Grandparent.  We will be introducing various “Learn to” programs such as WHMIS, Pet Care, Sewing, Photography and Photoshop, etc.  Our programming will also include emergent based educational presentations (youth expressed interests).

The staff who will be working at the Walden Youth Centre this year will include, June Gauthier, Krystle Beausoleil and Kelly Haner.

Please note that on Fridays, the Citizen Service Centre closes its doors at 5pm, so please be advised that our alternate entrance is at the rear of the building if you will be picking your child up.  You can reach us at (705)692-1777.

We look forward to continued growth and development here at the Walden Youth for Youth Centre.

Walden Youth For Youth Centre

...News for May 2012!

The Walden Youth for Youth Centre teens will be visible their neon yellow t-shirts during the month of May in their “Spring Cleanup Initiative.” It is wonderful to see the youth donating their time to make a difference in their community.

The Greater Sudbury Police will be teaming up with the Walden Youth Group to play some road hockey, the date and time have yet to be confirmed but the youth are quite pumped up about it. It’s wonderful to see the youth interacting with our Officers on such a comfortable level.

The end of the school season is fast approaching which also means that the Youth Centre will also close its doors until September. Each year at this time, the Walden Youth for Youth Centre staff take full advantage of this great coaching opportunity. We spend one on one time with each youth putting together functional resumes and application letters and we assist them with job searches that will help them gain summer employment. Some of our youth have been working with us and have gotten their WHMIS certificates online over the last couple of weeks.

The Walden Youth look forward to making their money tree donation to the Walden Pet Save during the first week in June. They have been participating over the last couple of months in a “Food for Pets” program. Each snack that the youth purchase on Fridays from their tuck shop, go towards their Pet Save Fundraising Project.

Adopt a Grandparent Christmas Gifts are ready!

Hello everyone, it’s almost that time.  The Adopt a Grandparent gifts are ready…we are just waiting for a few more youth to sign the remaining Christmas cards.  Each of the 16 seniors will receive a card signed by the youth and a beautiful shatter resistant Christmas ornament.  There have been a few chocolate treats slipped inside and a candy cane has been carefully tucked underneath the ribbon along with a decorative Christmas clip.

We look forward to this special presentation sharing a little bit of Christmas magic within the Walden Senior Community.

Walden Youth For Youth

…Showing the Christmas Spirit!

Christmas wreath with holly berries

The Walden Youth for Youth Centre has teamed up with the other 5 Youth Centres within the City of Greater Sudbury for the Annual Santa Claus Parade.  The theme this year is "The Sound of Christmas."  The Youth Centre float's name will be "Frosty's Friends Rocking the CGS!" Thank you to Councilor Jacques Barbeau for donating the snowmen for the float. It was much appreciated.

The Walden Youth have chosen 15 seniors to adopt as Grandparents for this Christmas and they have been busy putting together a special Christmas surprise for them.  There will be several happy expressions at our local Meadowbrook Retirement Village this Christmas.  We are so very proud of our youth!

Stay tuned for the last week in November when the Walden Youth sing door to door to fundraise for the Lion's Club Christmas Telethon.  This will be their third year collecting for the telethon and they are feeling very enthusiastic.  We are hoping to get some accumulation of the fluffy white stuff before that time.

The Walden Youth for Youth Centre would like to thank everyone in advance for their generous contributions to this wonderful cause and for opening their doors to our local youth who are out their giving of themselves in the Christmas spirit.

…Getting into the Spirit of Christmas!

The Walden Youth for Youth Centre teens will be out canvassing for the Lion’s Club Christmas Telethon during the week of November 28th.  We would like to thank the generous community members in advance for their donations to this wonderful cause.  Our Youth can be seen Telethon Night on MCTV presenting for our area.

Our Walden Youth have once again chosen to adopt a grandparent this Christmas season from the Meadowbrook Retirement Village.  Several seniors will be carefully chosen to receive a special Christmas Gift to brighten their holiday.

Walden Youth For Youth Centre…Up & Running Again!

The staff at the Walden Youth for Youth Centre (WYFYC) would like to welcome youth ages 12-18 years to our 2011-2012 season. We are located in the lower level of the Lively Citizen Service Centre/Library at 15 Kin Drive. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 2-8pm.

One of the prerequisites for high school graduation is to successfully obtain 40 hours of volunteer work. The Youth Centre has worked in partnership with your school in the past offering opportunities to accumulate required volunteer hours. Come out to the Youth Centre and take advantage of the many in-house activities offered daily. Get involved in making a difference in your community and gain school credit. Remember that volunteer opportunities are experiences that can be included in your resume as you go out looking for part time jobs!

Notice: Our WYFYC piano needs some maintenance and needs to be tuned. If there is a piano-tuner in CGS who would be willing to donate their time to tune our piano that would be greatly appreciated.

For more information, please call June Gauthier or Curtis Zinger, Coordinators, Walden Youth for Youth Centre at (705) 692-1777

Special thanks to the Walden Lions Club and the Walden Youth for Youth for their efforts in cleaning up Ward 2.

Walden Youth for Youth Are Going Full Force!

During March & April our WYFYC youth will be busy with preparation of resumes and cover letters, daily job searches and practicing interview skills in anticipation of summer employment. 2009, 2010 volunteer experiences by many of our youth at WYFYC not only has helped our community but it can also be included on their resumes: fundraising for the Lion’s Club Christmas Telethon, our Shoveling for Seniors Program and helping at the Walden Winter Carnival, etc.

“…We would like to take this time to thank our youth for their generosity and enthusiasm while they are out in the community donating their time to such great causes. We are proud of each and every one!”

June Epple , Susi Knezaurek, Coordinators- Walden Youth for Youth Centre

Walden Youth for Youth has had a very busy winter season thus far. They have been involved with fundraising for the local Lion’s Club Christmas Telethon and raised $400.30 in their second year of support. They were pleased to travel in the Mayor’s bus to deliver their donation on Telethon Night, thanks to Councillor Jacques Barbeau.
The Walden Youth adopted 10 grandparents for the Christmas season and treated them with chocolate drizzled spoons, hot chocolate and candy canes. They presented the Christmas treats in Christmas Mugs wrapped nicely in cellophane and ribbons.
Councillor Barbeau treated the Walden Youth group with a special Christmas dinner and came in to surprise them with chocolate treats! A huge thank you goes to Councillor Barbeau from the teens at the Walden Youth for Youth Centre for his continued support in all of their endeavors.
Several youth from Walden Youth for Youth have had the fortunate opportunity to receive complimentary training in Facilitative Leadership thanks to Stéphanie Chevrette. (Regional Coordinator, Young Community Leaders Project, ICA Canada/YMCA Employment Services.) Thank you Stephanie, the certificates and skills that the youth obtained through this training will prove to be instrumental tools in their life journey.
Walden Youth have also resumed their shoveling for seniors program. Most of our youth are under the age of 17, meaning that they don’t hold a permanent valid driver’s permit. This puts some limitations upon the programming when it comes to servicing seniors in need who are out of walking distance from the Youth Centre location located on Kin Drive. We are located in the lower level of the Community Service Centre, on Kin Drive.
It would be greatly appreciated if everyone could pool together and work on this project assisting our seniors in the Walden area. I am requesting that anyone who is available to help contact me so that I can prepare a list of volunteers.

Walden Youth For Youth ...looking for Community Partners to help Seniors in Walden!

This is the second winter that the Walden Youth for Youth have been volunteering their time within the community offering a free shoveling service to seniors. This program has branched off into raking for seniors and gardening for seniors during the spring, summer and fall months.

Most of our youth are under the age of 17, meaning that they don't hold a permanent valid driver's permit. This puts some limitations upon the programming when it comes to servicing seniors in need who are out of
walking distance from the Youth Centre location in the lower level of the Lively Community Service Centre, on Kin Drive.

It would be greatly appreciated if everyone could pool together and work on this project assisting our seniors in Walden communities - which our WYFY volunteers are unable to reach.

ie) We recently received a request re: snow removal from a senior living in Whitefish and it was too far for our volunteers to walk to.

I am requesting that anyone who is available to help please contact me so that I can prepare a list of volunteers who would be willing to help fill the gaps for these shoveling services for seniors in Walden communities. If you are available to help with our raking and gardening programs which run in the summer and fall, please indicate that as well.

I thank you all in advance,

June Epple, Coordinator

The Walden Youth for Youth

…Are back in session full force!

Programs such as Photography, Music/Guitar, Art & Crafts, Sewing, and Cooking are all under way.

Our youth are preparing for the winter season and you can look forward to the Shoveling for Seniors Program this winter. Our local youth will donate their time-which will result in volunteer hours towards their high school credits, or you can pay them for their services, the choice is yours.

The Walden Youth for Youth are interested in creating a new program this winter called "Adopt a Grandparent." Several seniors in Walden can expect something special for Christmas!

Our youth have also expressed an interest in Caroling to raise money to donate to the Lion's Club Christmas Telethon again this year. Last year the amount donated from the Walden Youth for Youth was approximately $360.00. A huge thank-you goes out to the Walden Community for opening their doors and pocketbooks last season-which made the donation experience positive for our youth. We look forward to singing to the Walden residents once again during the week of November 23rd through to the 27th.

This Christmas we would appreciate donations to the Walden Youth for Youth that would compliment our programming underway. Gift Certificates from merchants such as: Walmart, Michaels, Canadian Tire would be helpful. ie Our youth had expressed an interest in knitting hats and scarves for the homeless and for babies at the hospital this season, and we would have launched this program if we had the supplies to complete the project.

We are also looking for recycled light bulbs-both Christmas and regular light bulbs- for a current project, and we are also looking for the front page of old Christmas cards.

If you have any questions, please call the WYFY Centre

The youth will also be seen in the community going door-to- door caroling on several evenings mid to late November. Adult volunteers would be greatly appreciated for these outings.

Our youth centre can also be seen presenting their donation live on Telethon night - which will be on December 6th between 2pm-11pm at Sudbury Secondary School. We thank you all in advance for your participation in our fundraising here in Lively for this year’s Telethon!
