Guns a Blazing!

On January 6th the efforts of the Walden Ski Club paid off; there was
snow flying at the Lively Ski Hill and it wasn’t because of Mother
Nature! For two years the Walden Ski Club, a community-based volunteer
group, has been working hard to raise the funds necessary to make
snowmaking a reality at the Lively Ski Hill, and on this day the
community was introduced to the two newest members of the Club, snow
guns!
When the City of Greater Sudbury agreed to reopen the Lively Ski Hill
after an eight-year closure in 2008, the community was excited to get
back on the slopes, but the weather did not cooperate. With very little
snow falling that year the hill was unable to open to the public. This
is when the Walden Ski Club jumped into action and began a campaign to
raise the money necessary to bring snow making to the ski hill.
After two years of soliciting donations from the community, hosting
various fundraising events and working closely with the City of Greater
Sudbury, the Walden Ski Club was proud to participate in the
ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the 2010 ski season on
artificial snow!
The Walden Ski Club would like to thank all the people and businesses
that have supported them in their efforts to make snow making a reality.
The Club will continue to operate the concession stand at the Hill to
raise funds for the next phase of their campaign; rebuilding the chalet!

Lively Ski Hill
has its guns blazing
The Lively Ski Hill has been lit up with its new snow guns blazing for
about two weeks now, preparing to open for the season on Wednesday.
"Right now, we are just really excited to have the guns blowing snow,"
said Kelly Demers, volunteer marketing co-ordinator for the Walden Ski
Club.
The club has worked to revive the hill for the last few years, doing
repairs, adding a lift and raising funds for snowmaking. A lack of snow
had prevented the hill, which has been closed since about 2001, from
opening.
The club collected the $43,000 needed to purchase snow-making equipment
a couple of years ago, but the hill then ran into another issue -- a
lack of water access.
Mother Nature did provide enough snow last season for the hill to open
for about three months.
"It was a bit spotty because there were certainly some days where we had
to close due to conditions. Overall, we were open for about three
months. We considered that pretty successful," Demers said.
This year, the hill won't be so weather dependent.
The club has collected more than $12,000 and the city has kicked in the
remainder of the cost to bring snowmaking to the hill. The price tag for
snowmaking and water access was about $120,000, Demers said.
Snow making started at the hill about two weeks ago.
"This is the first year we are going to have snowmaking. The conditions
on the hill will be excellent," Demers said.
The city, which is taking care of maintenance and snow making, announced
the opening of the hill will take place on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Mayor
John Rodriguez and Coun. Jacques Barbeau are scheduled to be at the
opening
Lively Ski Hill to Have Snowmaking!
The Walden Ski Club has been working with the City of Greater Sudbury
over the course of the summer to ensure snowmaking equipment will be
installed in time for the 2009-2010 ski season. Currently the water line
needed to operate the guns is being installed and all the other
necessary equipment has been ordered. The Club expects to have
everything in place for the upcoming ski season. Volunteers with the
Club have also been working hard to clear the ski hill of brush and
other saplings that may impede skiers. The Walden Ski Club would like to

Nature helps Lively skiers
Abundance of snow allows ski hill to open for first time in eight years

Lively Ski Hill is ready to open for the first time since 2001,
thanks in part to Mother Nature.
"We are really excited and happy to finally get things off the ground
and moving along," said Kelly Demers, fundraising coordinator with
Walden Ski Club. "We have been working very hard over the past few years
to get the ski hill open."
The Walden Ski Club and the city have been working to revive the hill --
which closed in 2001 -- over the last few years. Repair work was done
and a lift was added, but a lack of snow kept skiers off the hill.
"This year, Mother Nature has decided to bestow us with enough snow so
that we are going to be able to open starting this Saturday," Demers
said.
The hill will be open from noon-4:30 p. m. and will continue operation
through the season, weather permitting.
A grand reopening party is scheduled for Jan. 17, which will include a
barbecue.
"We are going to be offering everybody a free lift pass that day just to
say thank you for being so patient in waiting for the ski hill to
finally open," Demers said.
The club decided last year to work toward installing snow-making
equipment at the hill.
The club collected the $43,000 needed to purchase the equipment, but the
hill does not have an adequate water source.
"The only water source that is available right now is the residential
line, and that's not an acceptable option," Demers said. "We need to
raise the money to have a new waterline installed."
The cost would be about $107,000 and the club has secured about $43,000.
Demers said they are trying to raise the additional $64,000 by the
spring.

"Then, the city can start construction over the summer and we can have
everything installed and ready to go by next ski season," Demers said.
"That is our main, big goal right now."

Lively ski hill opens today

Things are going downhill in Lively again.
That's because the Lively Ski Hill is back in business after
an eight-year absence.
The hill will open for the season today from noon- 4:30 p. m. Saturdays
and Sundays, and from 7-9:30 p. m. Wednesdays and Fridays.
The hill features a new platter lift and concession stand.
Operating hours are dependent on weather conditions and may change
without notice.

Snowmaking almost a reality
for Lively Ski Hill
For the past three years we, the Walden Ski Club, in partnership with
the City of Greater Sudbury, have been working hard to get the Lively
Ski Hill up and running again. The weather, however, has not been
cooperating. Last year the Club decided that installing snowmaking
equipment at the hill would increase the hill’s ability to open and
remain open even when Mother Nature decided otherwise.
We embarked on a fundraising campaign that saw us raise the $43,000
needed to purchase the snowmaking equipment. This was done through
several fundraisers throughout the community, as well as donations from
Councilor Jacques Barbeau, the City of Greater Sudbury and local
businesses and companies. We would like to give a warm thanks to all
those who have given generously.
Now all that remains between making our goal of snowmaking at Lively a
reality is infrastructure, specifically water. The snowmaking process
requires a great deal of water and at present the only water source
available is the residential line for First Ave and Eastern Ave. If we
were to hook our water line to this system the residents on these
streets would loose significant water pressure, and that is not an
acceptable solution.
The solution presented to us by the City is to have our very own water
system installed so we do not disturb the service for the residents.
Unfortunately, it will cost approximately $80,000 to have this work
done. The City has decided that if we can raise the funds needed by this
spring they will proceed with installing the water line in time for the
2009-2010 ski season.
It is with this new goal that we are embarking on another fundraising
campaign. We will be contacting businesses throughout The Greater
Sudbury Area asking for donations as well as accepting donations from
citizens. A special donor’s wall will be designed and displayed in the
chalet to showcase those who have given generously to the ski hill. If

We would also like to mention that even though we will not have the
snowmaking running this season, if we get adequate snow fall this year

FREE PUBLIC TRANSIT FROM LIVELY TO ADANAC SKI HILL
DURING MARCH BREAK
Downhill skiers from Lively and area won't have to miss their favourite
sport over the March Break.
Due to a lack of natural snow cover on the Lively ski hill, the Walden
Ski Club has partnered with the City of Greater Sudbury and Ward 2
Councillor Jacques Barbeau to offer free public transit to Adanac Ski
Hill, from Monday, March 10 until Friday, March 14.
Greater Sudbury Transit express bus service will leave the T.M. Davies
Community Centre/Arena at 9:10 a.m. and 11:40 a.m. each day. Return
transportation from Adanac Ski Hill will leave at 1:45 p.m. and 4:15
p.m. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Adanac Ski Hill is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from March 10 to 14. Lift
tickets are available for purchase at the hill. For information about

Fundraising Concert Brings Local Talent Home!
The Walden Ski Club, which operates the Lively Ski Hill, is joining
forces with recording artists Superstack and Angie Nussey for a
fundraising concert on January 19, 2008. This concert, named Rock For
Snow, will raise money to go towards the purchase and installation of
snowmaking equipment for the Lively Ski Hill.
The event will feature exclusive live performances by recording artists
Superstack, Angie Nussey, and Basement Arms, dinner catered by New
Orleans Pizza, and a raffle draw for great prizes. Both Superstack and
Angie Nussey are Lively natives and are excited to be a part of this
fundraising effort.
Tickets are only $20 each and can be purchased at New Orleans Pizza in
Lively, or through any Walden Ski Club member. This is a 19+ event only.

Greater Sudbury Ski Hills not yet open for season
Residents are advised that the Greater Sudbury Ski Hills (including
Adanac, Capreol and Lively) are not yet operational for the 2007-2008
season. More snow is required in order to create a safe terrain for all
skiers and snowboarders. The City will advise the media and the public
when the hills are ready to open.
