September Edition of SideLines.pdf

The Walden Cross Country Fitness Club has received a $10,000 donation from Hydro One through the Power Play Program. The funds will enable the club to improve the energy efficiency of their original chalet located at the trailhead in Naughton. A portion of the funds will also be invested in the construction of a ramp for the same building to facilitate access to the building. The Club offers skiing instruction and coaching for para- nordic skiers and the improved access will help to support this program.

The funds provided through the Power Play program will help support the efforts of the volunteers of the Walden Cross Country Fitness Club.

President’s Remarks

By John Mullock

We have had a busy summer with the bike races, a yard sale, some work on the buildings and the continuation of the youth programs. Ralph has kept the trails mowed and they have been in good condition for the many walkers and cyclists.

This fall we hope to develop a new section to bring the Devil’s Elbow back into operation plus a hill section on the lit trail to give variety to the skiers. Also the landscaping around the new chalet will be done in September/October. This will require many volunteers to get all the projects completed.

Although the long range forecast is for little snow this winter let’s hope they are wrong so that we can have another year with excellent conditions and in excess of 700 members.

Guts and Glory Luncheon

By Patti Kitler

SportLink, an organization which raises funds to help assist and promote local sports organizations, is holding their annual fundraising luncheon on Friday October 22, 2010 at the Radisson Hotel. The luncheon, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm will include speakers, one of whom is Walden’s own Alannah MacLean.

We hope that some of our members will be able to attend this very worthwhile event and support Alannah. Tickets are $60 each and can be reserved by calling 674-4455 ext 4434 or visit www.sportlink.ca

Walden Fall Fair

By Len Wiseman

The Walden Cross Country Fitness Club was represented at the Walden Fall Fair on September 11. We had a table with brochures, a photo album, press clippings, event information, and an electronic picture frame showing lots of great pictures of our trails and past events. Although we were not in the best location (upstairs in the "stable"), lots of people passed by, looked at the information and pictures, and took brochures. 2

Thanks to those who helped the Fair Committee and me with set-up and take-down. Next year we should consider attending with our own tent and more members in a more accessible location. We would be able to show off more of our programs, maybe even do some demonstrations.

News from the Chalet

By Sue Murray

Well it's been a great summer. It’s hard to think about the snow and cold weather approaching. However, this is the time of year we need to prepare for the winter season.

I am looking for some volunteers to go through the rental equipment with me to check for damage and to do any minor repairs and servicing. I would also like to prepare an inventory for the board, what shape the equipment is in, and if there is anything we need prior to the beginning of the season.

If you have some equipment knowledge and would like to help with this project please contact Sue Murray at 692-5648.

Trails

By Ralph Kitler

We are expecting a busy trail work schedule this fall and welcome any and all volunteers. We will have work parties every Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6 p.m. till dark. There will also be several weekend work parties.

Some of the projects are:

- trail expansion, hopefully re-opening Devil’s Elbow, adding

a hill on the 3km loop

- brushing and widening all trails

- laying of wood chips

- removing exposed and dislodged rocks & stones

- repairing trail damage from summer usage

- removing standing dead trees, prior to the winter use

- landscaping & laying of lockstone around new chalet

- new signage

-

To date, there has been more than 170 hours of volunteer trail maintenance performed since May.

If interested in helping out, please contact Ralph at 692-3818. 3

Walden Club Membership Online Registration

By Karen Broughton

This year, new and existing club members will be able to purchase their 2010-11 season membership online. The registration process will be available through www.Zone4.ca. Zone4 is already used by many other ski clubs to make annual membership and event registrations simple and easy to do via the internet. Once you have registered, Zone 4's QuickList System can store all your registration information making future registrations a snap. As in the past, those wishing to register in-person or by mail can still do so. However, we really encourage everyone to make use of this new feature. You will find it very quick and easy to use, and it will help minimize the volunteer hours needed to compile all the information needed to keep track of our growing membership!

Registering your children in the Jackrabbit and Bunnyrabbit program will also be possible with this system. In-person registration at the Club on the day of the Ski Swap, Saturday November 13th will be available as usual.

An email will be sent to all members when the online system is available, and information will be posted on the Club's website as well.

Junior Development

By Patti Kitler

This program has been running since May 5, 2010. This summer we had 40 people out at some training sessions: 30 athletes and 10 parents. The commitment level of the older athletes has changed. The athletes met three times a week during the summer to work on strength and twice a week for endurance work such as running, roller skiing and biking. You may have seen a group riding the Trans Canada Trail from Lively to the trails during the summer.

The older athletes attended training camps across Ontario to train with their friends, work with other coaches and push themselves in group settings. This year we have two athletes on the Ontario Cross Country Ski Team: Alannah Maclean and Victor Hopper. Stephanie St. Denis is on the Ontario Biathlon Team and Eric Schryer has made huge strides this summer to help him make the team in 2011.

Marlee Clement and Andrew Kendall trained hard this summer with the team and will be racing for the Laurentian University Nordic Team.

The club has an amazing young group of athletes coming up, learning from our older athletes and challenging them when they can. Keep an eye out for the following athletes: Issy Maclean, Emily Marcolini, Ryan Hunter, Kurtis Clement, Alec Shea, Nathan Johnston, David Hanson and a group still in elementary school having fun training.

And finally, many thanks to Craig Shea for his donation of the global gym. It has made a difference. 5

Para-Nordic Program

By Patti Kitler

WCCFC partnered with CCO and ParaSport Ontario and held our first Provincial training camp for our Para-Nordic athletes from Sept. 10 to 12. The camp was a huge success with athletes from across Northern Ontario and two athletes from Toronto and Kitchener.

Jeff Whiting, a Level 4 Coach for cross country skiing came to help the athletes learn more about training and to challenge them to move to another level. Ken Campbell, an excellent track coach for the disabled was also in attendance to help work with the kids. Anthony Story from Temiskaming Nordic and Sara Birosh from North Bay Nordic, Gary Fohr from Highlands Nordic attended the camp along with David Hanson and Michelle St. Denis. Thank you to the parents for helping to make the camp a success.

The athletes did a critical speed test to find out how their training is coming along, technique session, indoor classroom session on how to train, how to make the right choices as a student and athlete. They also participated in team building activities. This group of athletes has trained from May and has been motivated to set goals and train for the upcoming racing season.

The Para-Nordic program meets Thursday evenings from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. If you are interested in volunteering, please do not hesitate to call Patti at 692-3818 or come out on Thursday to see what we are all about.

Ontario Midget Championships

March 5-6, 2011

By Patti Kitler

In 2007, Walden held the Ontario Midget Championships and we have been given the opportunity again for 2011. There will be young skiers from across the province at our event to meet new friends and have fun racing.

We will be offering an officials workshop and need members to come out and take the course. Len will send out the date for the workshop when we have confirmed the date. For those who have taken Level 1 there will be a Level 2 workshop offered. Stay tuned. 6

Adaptive Ski Program

Walden Cross Country Fitness Club has developed a trail system for people to hike, walk and run during the summer months and cross country ski in the winter time. The club runs programs for children and adults to learn how to enjoy our beautiful winters.

In winter of 2007 the WCCFC offered two Adaptive Ski Days. Adaptive Skiing is for people with physical disabilities who want something to do during the winter. We had four participants who used wheelchairs come out to try skiing with their families. The participants were supplied sit skis and the rest of their families were offered skis to allow the families to ski together. A sit ski is similar to a wheelchair, instead of wheels the chair has a metal bar that attaches to a pair of cross country skis. The parents were very excited to be able to enjoy a winter activity with their children.

In the fall of 2008, WCCFC will be starting a program for people with physical disabilities. The objective of fall training is to help strengthen the proper muscles for participants prior to the snow arriving. The program PWAD (Participants with a disability) meet once or twice a week from the fall until the snow melts in March. The program will offer an opportunity for families to cross country ski with the person with a disability. This will be one of the few outdoor winter sports that will include the whole family. The program will be designed to meet the participants’ needs.

If you would like to volunteer or come out to participate please call Patti @ 692-3818
