Good afternoon all,
Please note information below:
As you may have heard, the date for the Greater Sudbury 125 Anniversary
event has been set as June 7th. It is anticipated the event will be held
in four major venues across the downtown core as well as on the streets
of downtown.
1. The City of Greater Sudbury's 125 Committee is seeking entertainers
of all forms for performances at on of the major venues. Entertainment
can come in the form of buskers, solo acts, small groups or large groups
and these could include school groups, community theatre groups, or
formal entertainers. Participation in the event is on a community
service basis. Interested parties are asked to contact either Alison
McCambridge at ext. 2426 or Cindi Briscoe at ext. 4400, or visit the
City's 125 website or www.mysudbury.ca.
2. The City of Greater Sudbury's 125 Committee is also seeking groups or
businesses to participate as vendors or offer display booths during the
event. This is an excellent fundraising opportunity for community groups
or agencies who wish to elevate their profile in the community.
Appropriate insurance will be required and we will assist in obtaining
permits to not-for-profit agencies. Groups are encouraged to consider
the 125 theme. Businesses can consider decorating their booths in theme
or selling goods along the $1.25 concept. Interested parties are asked
to contact either Alison McCambridge at ext. 2426 or Cindi Briscoe at
ext. 4400, or visit the City's 125 website or
www.mysudbury.ca.
3. Volunteers are needed the day prior to, the day of and the day
following the event. Interested groups and individuals can contact
either me or Cindi Briscoe at ext. 4400, or visit the City's 125 website
or www.mysudbury.ca.
Thank you for your assistance. If you have any questions, please feel
free to contact me at ext. 2426.
Sincerely,
Alison

For immediate release Wednesday,

Bonfires, birthday cake, bands and more Greater Sudbury’s 125th
anniversary celebrations are all about community
Residents of Greater Sudbury and visitors from across Canada and around
the world can look forward to a year full of special events and
celebrations as the city marks its 125th anniversary.
Wednesday evening, Greater Sudbury Council gave the green light to a
series of initiatives to celebrate the community’s 125 birthday. Five
signature special events headline the program.
•
Playgrounds across the city will come alive this month as Neighbourhood
Playground Associations and Community Action Networks across the city
invite residents and visitors to community bonfires, most of which are
scheduled for next Sunday.
•
On April 5 and 6, the Sudbury Arena will be home to the Northern
Aboriginal Festival coordinated through the work of the Native Students
Associations of Laurentian University, Cambrian College and the City of
Greater Sudbury.
•
On July 18 and 19, heritage tours of historic buildings across the
city–part of Ontario’s Doors Open program–will provide residents and
visitors with an opportunity to get a closer look at Greater Sudbury’s
fascinating past.
•
In the summer, crowds will gather at Tom Davies Square and Memorial Park
to take in birthday celebrations featuring live bands, face painting for
the kids, a giant birthday cake and kiosks showcasing the creative
talents of some of the city’s many restaurants. A date for this event
has not been finalized.
•
By November 15 it will be time to gear up for the holidays with a Santa
Claus parade focusing on Christmas Past/Nöel d’antan.
Greater Sudbury traces its history to 1883 with the arrival of the
Canadian Pacific Railway. A lumber camp, called Sainte-Anne-des-Pins,
arose out of the need for a local source of rail ties for the rail bed,
and the Jesuits arrived to minister the rail workers. Townships were
later established and the community that would eventually grow into the
City of Greater Sudbury was born.
“Aboriginal peoples have been calling this land home for centuries,”
said Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez, “But that early francophone
settlement of Sainte-Anne-des-Pins is really the beginning of modern-day
Greater Sudbury. For 125 years, this community has been a glorious mix
of cultures¾an economic powerhouse whose riches are drawn from the land
and from the creative genius of the diverse peoples who came to live
here. Today, we who make our homes in Greater Sudbury have much to
share; much to celebrate.”
The city has developed an anniversary logo to raise public awareness
about the celebrations. Businesses, festival organizers and community
groups are being encouraged to use the logo¾availabltheir own
promotional materials. Event support kits - including temporary tattoos,
pins, balloons, and stickers are also available to event organizers by
calling the City at 3-1-1.
Meanwhile, city residents can fill out a form on the website to have
Mayor Rodriguez issue a personal invitation to their out-of-town family
members or friends to come to Greater Sudbury to join in the
festivities.

Five signature events are scheduled to mark the
celebrations. They are
as follows:
1. February 17, 2008 - Community Bonfire - to be held at several
of the Playgrounds across the community concurrently. The theme of this
event is “Keep the Home Fires Burning”, and is being sponsored by
Neighbourhood Playground Associations and Community Action Networks
across the Municipality.
2. April 5 & 6, 2008 - Northern Aboriginal Festival - coordinated
by the Laurentian University / Cambrian College Native Student’s
Associations to be held at the Sudbury Arena. The theme of this
Festival is “Coming Together”.
3. July 18 & 19, 2008 - Doors Open/Heritage Tour of Historical
Buildings to include all of the communities that encompass the Greater
Sudbury area.
4. July 30, 2008 (tentative date) - Greater Sudbury’s 125th
Anniversary Party - to be held at Tom Davies Square / Memorial Park with
the potential of expanding to other venues within the downtown core.
This event would be very interactive and has the potential to include:
local live bands, a children’s area with face painting, a large
anniversary cake, local restaurants setting up food vending stations,
etc. The committee is in the process of coordinating this premiere
event.
5. November 15, 2008 - Santa Claus Parade - The theme of the parade
will be “Christmas Past/Noel d’antan” honouring the 125th
anniversary.
