Corporal Jessie Tait Revisits École
St-Paul!
Students at École St-Paul in Lively will long remember the events that
took place in their school to mark Remembrance Day this year. On
November 4th, Corporal Jesse Tait who had just returned from Afghanistan
while serving with the Canadian forces met with the grade 5 to grade 8
students. He gave a Power Point Presentation and answered many of the
students’ questions. He talked about his experience and his friends that
he lost in combat. This was Corporal Tait’s second visit at the school
as he also visited before his departure for Afghanistan.
On November 11th, there was a ceremony. Students brought pictures and
cards that will be given to war veterans. Grade 7 and 8 students each
read a message to mark the importance of this day. * See attached Photo

July CAN Report to the Sudbury
Star
Oh blow gentle southern breeze, because the breezes from the north and
east are a little “high” with reminders of good meals of yesterday. This
is yet another summer of our discontent for Waldenites with that promise
of only two more. The velvet nights of July and August will be enjoyed
inside. All will be well, eventually. Even a dead horse doesn’t stink
forever.
Lively District Secondary School will have its 50+ reunion May 15, 16,
17, 2009. An open meeting for volunteers at the Ben Moxam Community
Centre is planned for July 21, 2008.
For any questions you may have, contact Jim Savarie 692-5921 or Mary
Purvis 692-3747.
I went to my high school reunion in Kirkland Lake in 2006 and met many
old people I went to school with. It’s great to see school chums again
and catch up on all the news. So folks, there’s time to make travel
plans, eat lots of unbuttered popcorn and exercise regularly, to be the
best that’s in you.
The Kantola Black Lake Road Committee meets regularly to discuss
concerns and to work towards solving them.
At present, the Long Lake Park poses some problems, especially for area
residents. There are also trucking issues. Kantola is a winding, hilly,
narrow road with corners so sharp, one can almost read one’s own back
license plate but then we challenge ourselves. The road committee works
with municipal authorities to make things safe.
Thanks to Neeltje Van Roon, Dale Kilbey and other ecologically-minded
folk, the ban-the-plastic-bag campaign has gained momentum in Walden.
Our Councilor, Jacques Barbeau, has co-sponsored a council resolution to
rid us of this landfill clogging material. Who would have thought that
the green Battistelli bins would become so popular. They go into the
hardware store, the LCBO and everywhere that people go to get things.
Many are bringing bags from home to cut down on the number in
circulation. One day, I left home without my green bins, and felt guilty
enough to avoid people who might see those new plastic bags. Can we get
along without them? Yes we can!
Summer programs for the Lively Playground are at full throttle. Donna,
Courtney and Senior Supervisor, Heather have Dress up Days, Water Fun at
Meatbird Lake, Twister and Hawaiian Days, Any Kind of Costume Days, and
Sports and Game Times. The program runs Monday to Friday (check posted
timetable at Ben Moxam Centre). Drop off from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. and pick
up from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. Need more information? Call 692-1777.
Right now, our grade 7s and 8s from George Vanier and Jessie Hamilton
are still in summer holiday mode with nary a thought about the day after
Labour Day. Meanwhile, things are happening in their new school within
Lively District Secondary School. This writer toured it with school
principal, Ms. Judy Noble. Classrooms, which are huge and bright, have
been refurbished. The full science and computer lab awaits the students.
Familiar teachers will be there to greet them including Mr. Cory Ross,
who will continue his Music Program. A Tech teacher for the “techies”
has been hired. This can only be good. Remember those classes long past
of Home Economics and Shop? We know things have changed. Vacuum cleaners
can be used by both sexes and everyone can make a salad bowl out of a
block of wood.
For those students who aspire to the stage, a production of “The Sound
of Music” is planned for this coming school year. So, how do you solve a
problem like Maria?
Although there is no French Immersion program due to a lack of numbers,
there are of course, regular French classes. “Le fromage est froid.” (I
know three other phrases necessary for survival.)
Start times and the lunch hour are separate from the regular secondary
students as well as the outdoor area just for 7s and 8s. Why you young
scholars even have your own entrance. The principal with the co-ordinating
committee have planned well for that “smooth move”.
Lively District Secondary will be offering courses in Ojibwe and Native
Studies. The High Skills Major in Mining is still available as is
Fitness, stressing health and wellness. This also has an outdoor
education component. An Advanced Placement (A.P.) program is on board.
This is based on an international enrichment curriculum. Universities
love these graduates.
Ms. Noble is enthusiastic about having grades 7 and 8 at L.D.S.S. and
expects an excellent collegiate year. Rah! Rah!

the story of “Sudbury’s Run Away Mayor”. This interesting but little
know event in Sudbury’s history revolves around Murray Bigger, Mayor of
Sudbury in 1895.
A respected lawyer, school trustee
and town Councilor, Mr. Bigger vanished abruptly from town in September
of 1897. On that evening he told his wife he was going into his study
to look at the mail. When she checked in on him about 9:30 that night
Mr. Bigger was nowhere too be found.
To learn about the surprising end to
this story, and what happened to former Mayor Bigger be sure to come to
the CGS 125th Anniversary Party in downtown Sudbury on June 7th.

Join our Fight to Keep R.H. Murray PS Open!
Recently, the Rainbow School Board’s Administrative Council has
recommended combining three Walden area elementary schools. The proposed
closure of Whitefish’s R.H. Murray contradicts the recommendations made
by the Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) to keep community schools
open.
An ARC was assembled of parents, teachers, principals and community
members to gather input, review data and propose recommendations to the
School Board. It is upsetting that the RDSB Administrative Council has
chosen to ignore ALL of the ARC’ s recommendations to keep R.H. Murray
open - which is vital to community sustainability.
The board has cited high repair costs and declining population as its
argument for this school’s closure. Their repair cost estimates are
however incorrect in several areas. The population data used by the
board is outdated and does not take into account the opening of the new
Totten Mine.
Please join our fight to keep R. H. Murray open!

‘Walden…Naturally’ Signs Saved! Thanks to Councilor Barbeau, CGS &
Greater Sudbury Heritage Museums…part of our Walden Heritage has been
saved!
Watch for the Loon at the Anderson Farm!
I asked Ian Wood, former Economic Development Officer- Town of Walden to
tell me the story.
8 Years ago, 4 ‘Walden …Naturally’ Signs- featuring the Loon-were
installed, as an initiative of the Town of Walden Economic Development
Advisory Committee.
“…The Walden EDAC, chaired by Brent Battistelli, worked with me to
develop "Taking Flight - An Economic Development Action Plan, adopted by
Council, in March 1999 …among its many recommendations was the idea to
install new identification signs at our 4 highway entrances.
“… I wanted a Loon because of Walden's lakes & because a Walden youth-
Matthew Conroy of Makada Drive - was credited with recommending that the
Loon become Ontario's Official Avian Emblem in 1994. The slogan
"...naturally" was intended to convey our outstanding landscape but also
to emphasize that Walden is a natural & easy choice for living, working
& playing.”
“…The artwork-for the Loon logo & the signs- was created by Kevin Burtt
& his company, Nexus Graphics. Kevin was still at Cambrian College-
working from his parents' basement in Hillcrest Subdivision- when I
hired him to do this work. Nexus now has offices in Toronto and Sudbury
& he has done work for clients like Canadian Tire and Chrysler.”
We hope that all our ‘Walden…naturally’ signs will find new homes. Email
your input to info@walden-CAN.com

What’s Happening in Walden?
Main Street is Not a Parking Lot! Angle Parking By-Law: In response
to a number of complaints, the Greater Sudbury Police Service, in
partnership with the CGS & Walden-CAN, has made an attempt to make
everyone aware of the parking situation on Main St. in Lively, from 6th
Ave. to 9th Ave.
Signs have been erected & enforcement has been active to clearly
indicate that the area in question is designated as “angle parking” (45
degree).
Be advised that in this situation, vehicles can “only” be driven forward
into the space and when exiting, they must follow the same direction as
to when they first drove in to park. This practice will prevent mishaps
& “close calls” and will facilitate the flow of vehicular traffic.
