Apple-Tasting - Yes, the long awaited third annual apple tasting event is on!
It’s a very informal affair, so come one, come all, bring the whole family and some friends to
Lewis’s Hardy Fruit Trees & Giant Pumpkins, in Naughton,
Wednesday September 21st (alternate day, in case of rain on Wednesday, is Friday September 23rd), 4 pm, until 8 pm or dark..
[See directions & maps at the bottom of this page.]
There should be three varieties of apples to sample this year: Carlos Queen, Goodland, & Red Sparkle.
Free sample wedges of the different apple varieties will be given, as supplies last.

Here’s what my Red Sparkle apple tree looks like. Irresistible, eh?....

Sorry, I don’t have enough fruit for sales.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pumpkin Viewing - The biggest pumpkin on my one and only plant is maybe a tad more than 350 pounds right now. It is not yet excitingly big, unless you have never seen a giant pumpkin before, in which case, it is! The plant is very healthy, growing 4 to 6 inches a day at its vine tips; This will continue as long as the weather cooperates but will end abruptly with first frost, expected anytime now.
The biggest pumpkin fruit is putting on about 20 lb per day.
Pictures don’t really capture it. Children (of all ages) will love it.!

This year’s one plant (!), grown from one seed (!), sown on May 1st, transplanted into the garden on May 18th, now covers an area about 70 feet long by 50 feet wide, and still expanding! There are presently only two pumpkins on the vines, both of which are actively growing. If you’ve never seen giant pumpkins before you won’t want to miss these beauties, and even if you have!...
And bring your camera, as there will be lots of photo-ops.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pumpkin Sales - FYI, Giant pumpkins will be on sale around Thanksgiving at 50¢ per pound.
Everything in my garden is grown organically, that is, without chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

Pumpkin Drive-by - For a few days before Thanksgiving, and between Thanksgiving and Halloween, I will bring a pumpkin or pumpkins to your home or to your school, or to your business, for $25.00, and stay 15 minutes while you get pictures of children, grandchildren, neighbours, staff etc., with the pumpkin(s).

Please let me know by email if you intend to come to next week’s third annual Apple Tasting & Pumpkin Viewing Event;
once you’ve figured that out.

Hope to see you!

Subject: Good Green Town Hall for Mayoral Candidates

The citizens of Greater Sudbury will choose a new Council, October 25.

Are you interested in candidates’ ideas and priorities on environmental questions such as supporting walking, biking and transit, enabling green jobs, and protecting our natural environment, including lake health?   Would you like the opportunity to ask your own ‘green’ questions?

Come out to the Good Green Town Hall for mayoral candidates, Wednesday, October 6,   7 – 9 p.m. (doors open at 6), in Council Chambers.

Bring your friends, family, and colleagues.  Print out the attached poster to circulate.  We all have a voice in voting, and in letting candidates know what is important to us and to our community.

The Good Green Town Hall is part of a grassroots effort assisted by Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury, The Climate Project Canada, reThink Green, Green Sudbury, Blue Green Canada, S.G.A., and Laurentian University’s Sustainable Earth Club.  Questions were submitted and prioritized by citizens on-line.  Nearly 100 citizens participated.  http://www.lu-ltspp.ca/townhall/ggqg_home.html <http://www.lu-ltspp.ca/townhall/ggqg_home.html>

Kratt Brothers to deliver FREE Presentations at Biodiversity Forum

Chris and Martin Kratt, known to children everywhere as the Kratt Brothers, will be in Greater Sudbury to share stories of their animal adventures in two free presentations as part of the City of Greater Sudbury’s Biodiversity Forum 2010. The event will be held at Glad Tidings Tabernacle on Saturday, April 10, 2010.

Combining curiosity, humour, and scientific knowledge, the Kratt’s have been helping children learn in an entertaining way since their television show Kratt’s Creatures first aired in 1996.

“The presentation is a natural tie-in to the City’s Biodiversity Action Plan, which encourages youth of all ages to become environmental stewards,” said Stephen Monet, Manager of Environmental Planning Initiatives for the City of Greater Sudbury. “The Kratt Brothers have a winning formula for getting kids excited about preserving the environment and inciting their curiosity in the wildlife that surrounds them – which is what the City wants to do through its environmental initiatives as well.”

The brothers produce, write, film, and co-star in three acclaimed series: the Parents Gold Choice Award winning Kratts Creatures, the Emmy Award winning Zoboomafoo and the new series Be the Creature, which airs on PBS, the National Geographic Channel, and CBC. All of The Kratt Brothers’ television shows appear daily on stations nationwide.

Residents are invited to attend one of two presentations on April 10: the first at 11:00 a.m. and the second at 1:00 p.m. Fans will have the opportunity to meet the Kratt Brothers and get autographs at 2:00 p.m. Both presentations are free but tickets are required as seating is limited. Citizens can pick up their tickets at any of the 13 branches of the Greater Sudbury Public Library.

Whitefish District Lions Club…Members in Action Feb.–June, 2010!

On Feb.14th, when sweethearts are supposed to be together we had die hard curlers at the Whitefish District Annual Curling Fun spiel at the Copper Cliff Curling Rink.  The Rink of Skip – Reino Maki, Vice- Bob 2nd –Jack Oatway and Lead Rose Maki came out on top and won the trophy for 1st prize. I know personally that this rink has been competing in this fun spiel for many years and to finally win is certainly a Gold Metal for them. To make sure it wasn’t a dream they’re all looking forward to their names appearing on the curling trophy. Congratulations to the team from Whitefish District Lions Club, great job, well done.

This year’s Fun spiel had 14 teams compete and although the group was smaller than usual we all had a great time!  Coordinator, Lion Eric Hansen did a fantastic job organizing prizes & coordinating the event. Eric and his family have a passion for curling and we can always count on their support. Thank you Lion Eric for all of your hard work, we look forward to next year.

During the months of April, May and June the Whitefish Lions members will be volunteering at Boardwalk on Fridays from 12:30–2:30pm. This fundraising event is also a great opportunity to meet friends and socialize with all the participants. Sudbury Rocks are looking forward to our membership hosting a Water Station at their Annual Rock, Race or Run for Diabetes on May 2nd, 2010. Look for us, we’ll be there, we Rock!

Then that moves us right into graduation time, scholarship applications and presentation of individual scholarships at our local schools. Presentations begin with Grade 1 students and follow up to Grade 12 graduation level.  Our membership look forward to supporting young growing minds and encouraging continued education. Look for the applications in your high schools.

And watch for the Information Flyers we’ll be mailing in March & April to get feedback to help us determine what the community wants us to get involved in. “Do we meet your needs?” We look forward to your ideas and input so we can establish our mandate for 2010- 2011.

Our membership meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday evening of each month at 6:30 at 4895 Municipal Road, Whitefish, the same building as the fire hall. Call the President Lion Marilyn Shamess at 866-0381 for more details.

The Whitefish District Lions Club…Making a Difference!
We realize volunteering sometimes is not in our schedule but our membership truly came through in December 2009! We once again partnered with the Beaver Lake Sports and Cultural Club to host the annual Senior’s Christmas Dinner on December 16. Salvation Army representatives were present and received financial gifts, which will be used to assist the people of Sudbury and area. It was a great success- a fun time was had by all!
Our Members also: worked over 190 hours selling tickets on the Dream Home for Canadian Hard of Hearing Association; rang bells for the Salvation Army; delivered food baskets to needy seniors and picked up and delivered toys from the Lions CTV Telethon to children in our community.
We believe it is essential to assist where we can. Fundraising activities ensure that our membership can respond to the needs of the community. One way we can help in 2010 is by providing Medical assistance devices such as walkers, crutches, wheel chairs etc. Please call Lion Ken at 866-0381 if you have a need.
Next on our agenda is the Annual Whitefish District Lions Club Mixed Curling Bonspiel February 14th at the Copper Cliff Curling Club. The cost is $80.00 per team – with Prizes for all curlers. Walden-CAN…A Note from the Chair!
Since becoming Chair of Walden-CAN 2 years ago, I’ve been very fortunate to have met and volunteered with an incredible woman- Jennifer Carlisle. Her intelligence, wit, kindness and dedication on the Executive have been incredible. Jennifer makes up half of the talented and creative publishing team of Walden-CAN’s Newsletter Committee and was an integral part of the Community Conference team last spring. She has become a true friend, and I will miss her warm smile, generous heart and hugs, as she and her husband Scott embark on a new path in Vancouver. On behalf of Walden-CAN Executive, we wish Jennifer and Scott all the best in their move. You will be truly missed!
In 2010, Walden will see the Sudbury District Nurse Practitioner Clinic open in Lively, as well as the City of Lakes Family Health Team Site, in the former Town of Walden Municipal Building. As Councilor Barbeau stated in our Winter Newsletter “…giving much relief to the approximately 4,000 orphaned patients we currently have in Walden”. Great reasons to celebrate!
We hope you will join us for our Annual General Meeting and Election of new Executive on Thursday, January 14th at 7pm, in the former Walden Town Council Chambers. Everyone is welcome! To learn more about Walden-CAN visit www.Walden-CAN.com  Karen Tait-Peacock, Chair, Walden-CAN

The Sudbury & District Kennel Club is very active in Walden. Training classes for puppies and adult dogs in obedience and agility are offered on a regular basis in Lively. For information about these classes, please call Lynne at 866-2322.

Training Tip: Learn to ignore bad behaviour and reward the good.

For example, if your dog is barking at the window, try not to yell at him. To your dog, your raised voice is just your way of barking and he interprets this as you joining him in raising the alarm. Instead, quietly distract him from the window and reward him with a tasty treat or a favourite toy when he is quiet. If you are consistent, in a short time you will see him bark once at a passerby and then turn to see what you have to offer.

Huddle up… ok I don’t need to tell anybody that this is do or die, you can all see the score board and we all know that time is running out and we are down by a touchdown( 3 days left, in 23rd spot need to be in top 20)… now, it is not out of reach but it will take a Hail Mary to get there,…… but guys that will only get us to the “show" finals) which will mean another week of hard practices continued voting) and with no promise that we will win, but we will be in the show and that is all anyone can ever ask for … hope…. It means making every block voting everyday) and breaking tackles and never letting the first man take you down (email others)… it isn’t going to be easy and you may not want to even do it,….. stopping now and figure it was good to even be involved …..but I can tell you one thing, you are the one that has to look at that guy in the mirror every morning when you brush your teeth and I can tell you from experience that the guy in the mirror never forgets, he knows when you jogged instead of sprinted or when you missed that block or fumbled the ball… he knows and he is relentless… but he also knows when you dug in deep and sacrificed your body for a moment for the chance to be in history, I don’t know about you, but I know that the guy in my mirror is not going to have a chance to say anything but you did your best on every play, every second of the game and when it is all said in done and I am exhausted and sore in the shower I will not dread the man in the mirror as he will know that I didn’t “try” but I DID my best…. Dig in deep, this is what we have been training for all year, all the wind sprints (made video), all those weights (media releases, face book) all the pain (my constant emails )… lets go do it … READY BREAK……….DOWN …. SET…. HUT HUT HUT

Subject: last chance to make it to finals

I have received some emails today saying that our project voting is back to zero… that is correct, we didn’t make the top 20 in the second round and this is our last chance to be in the top 20 and go onto the finals.( top 20 from 3 rounds=60) I must say I am not feeling as optimistic as I once was, it has been in the media and on the internet and I have contacted the high schools, city officials, all recreational sports groups etc. but we simply don’t have enough people voting daily from all of their email addresses…. It is not the size of our community as smaller ones have made it to the top 20 and we haven’t. There is only so much I can do… it is in your hands and the hands of the community… if you want this project you will vote daily and encourage others to do so too, if you don’t- you won’t…. thanks for helping out if you have been voting in the past and I encourage you to continue to vote… we really need about 5000 over the 2 week period to be in the top 20,( we had 1700) which to me doesn’t seem that hard(400 people vote each day for 14 days =5600)( probably even less than that as some of you have multiple emails….it is up to you)

HELP WANTED WITH THE CAR AND BIKE SHOW!

In 2008, Rib Fest attracted approximately 30,000 visitors. Last year, one of the key components to this new event was the huge car and motorcycle show on the Saturday and Sunday that drew some 300 motorcycles and cars. Ribfest also includes over 25 local acts, refreshment tents, professional rib teams, sidewalk vendors and more.

Ribfest is in need of an individual or organization to help them with the co-ordination of this year car show.

WHO: Seniors and Family Members in Walden and Area Communities

WHAT: Community Forum – Support Services for Seniors

WHERE: Tom Davies Community Arena (Walden)

WHEN: Thursday April 2nd 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

As you may be aware, the Walden Home Support Program was recently disbanded and is no longer in operation. The North East Local Health Integration Network (NELHIN) would like to reinstate the program in the near future and continue the provision of valuable support services which enable seniors to live in their home settings.

Before this program can be relaunched – the NELHIN needs to know the specific needs and priorities of seniors so that it can allocate funding and resources accordingly. In this regard, a community forum has been scheduled for Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Walden Arena to hear directly from seniors about the types of community support services which would best meet their current needs.

This is your opportunity to have input in the design of the new community support services program for seniors in Walden & Area and it is hoped that all interested seniors, family members and community representatives will attend. Dave Paquette of Summit Consulting has been hired to facilitate the forum and prepare a summary of the feedback collected.

Please share this information with other interested individuals and we look forward to seeing you on April 2nd.

Please join us for an evening with Dr. Marla Shapiro.

This event is specifically targeted to parents with children ages of eight and nine, however all community members are most welcome to attend!

NOTE: This program meets the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been accredited for 1 MAINPRO-M1 credits. This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, approved by University of Toronto for 1 hour.

Walden ‘Christmas Hamper Program’ 2008
…Great success thanks to Volunteers & Community Support!

43 Christmas Hampers were delivered in Walden, on December 15th, 2008,by Walden Fire Fighters- Station #6 Waters, Station # 7, Lively and Station #8 Whitefish.

This was made possible because of $2,325.00 raised and donated to the Christmas Hamper Program - $ 1,825.00 by Kinsmen Club of Walden and Volunteer Firefighters Boot Drive and $500.00 by Knights of Columbus 3909.

All the food collected at the Food Drive at Battistelli’s Y.I.G. was divided among 42 Christmas Hampers.

Agropur (Copper Cliff Dairy) donated 46- 3 litre bags of milk.

To each Hamper was added: 1 turkey, 1lb coffee, 1 bag of carrots, 2 bags of cookies, 1 can cranberry sauce, 1 lb margarine, 1 bag sugar, 1 jar pickles, 1 bag apples, 1 box stuffing, 1 bag onions, 1 bag oranges, 1 loaf bread, 10lbs potatoes, 1 bunch celery and 1 bag of milk.

This was made possible by the generosity of the people of Walden and the dedication of the Kinsmen Club of Walden, Walden Volunteer Firefighters and the Knights of Columbus 3909.

The Walden Figure Skating Club has the pleasure to be hosting Rainbow Skate, January 16th, 17th and 18th at the TM Davies Arena here in Walden. This is the annual Rainbow Region Inter Club Competition and includes all of the skating clubs within the Sudbury Region, including the clubs from Verner, Massey, Manitoulin Island and Espanola. This competition comes to Walden only once every six years and the WFSC plans on making this event a truely memorable experience for both competitors and spectators alike. The theme for this years competition is "Shoot for the Stars" and is meant to inspire our young skaters to follow their dreams much like our own Meagan Duhamel and her recent success, with her pairs partner Craig Buntin, on the international skating stage.
The Friday night of competition offers a great night of entertainment for spectators as this is when the Carnival lines compete. A carnival line is a type of synchronized skating and can have upwards of 25 skaters on the ice at once. Walden will have a number of teams competing in the carnival line as we showcase some of the numbers from our upcoming ice show Walden Goes to Camp Rock on April 5th.
As with any large competition we will be looking for volunteers to help make this a success. For more information about Rainbow Skate or about how you can help please contact us at interclub@waldenfigureskatingclub.ca  or check out our website www.waldenfigureskatingclub.ca.
Come out and support your local skaters!

Fridays at the Farm

Feeling disconnected from their food, a filmmaker and his family decide to join a community supported organic farm. As he photographs the growing process, the filmmaker moves from passive observer to active participant in the planting and harvesting of vegetables. "I want community gardens to be as common in big cities as libraries," says Laura Berman, coordinator of the Food Share Community Garden program in Toronto. Laura used to be a landscape architect, but grew tired of creating elaborate and expensive back yards for people who simply wanted a garden because they had money. She now designs and implements community gardens that provide food for people in need, which satisfies her more than any expensive garden ever would. (22 min)

Chickens in the City

Chickens in the City is a chicken-level view of two backyard coops in San Francisco. The film playfully explores the ways in which keeping chickens has helped shape the philosophies behind what and how urban chicken-owners eat. (7 min 20 s)

Mysteries of the Great Lakes

On Saturday, May 3, Science North is holding the World Premiere launch of their newest IMAX® film - Mysteries of the Great Lakes. The $6 million film has been about five years in the making, and as of May 5th will be playing in theatres around the globe. Be one of the first to see this spectacular film featuring the music of Gordon Lightfoot, and enjoy an evening themed around the flavour and spirit of the Great Lakes - specialty cocktails, a medley of food experiences, wine tasting, special activities, a silent auction and live entertainment. Not to mention the inaugural screening of the film and great company. Take a minute and check out the film's trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJeKsYGu640

On behalf of Science North, I'd like to ask you to join us at this fundraising gala, and be part of the celebration. This is a huge accomplishment for Science North, and certainly one that all of Sudbury can be proud of. Let's celebrate as a community and maintain the high level of enthusiasm and passion we have as a thriving city, and one not slowing down any time soon.

We're hoping for a crowd of 400 at the gala. Why not invite your colleagues, family and friends to join us? Be a part of the fun, and a part of this special evening. It's a great way to celebrate a new season.

Order tickets online at http://sciencenorth.ca/gala. Don't miss the boat!

World Premiere Gala presented by Sudbury Hyundai.

Kind thanks,

About the Film:

Mysteries of the Great Lakes is a timely film. All across the Great Lakes basin, there is a renewed interest in the health of the Lakes, and an increased awareness of the importance of this fresh water resource to the social and economic vitality of North America. Dubbed ‘inland seas’ by early European explorers, the Great Lakes have some of the most spectacular wilderness scenery on earth, and a fifth of all the planet’s fresh water. Today, 25% of all Canadians, and 10% of Americans live on the Great Lakes. In addition, one in every three Canadians and one in every seven Americans rely on the Great Lakes for their fresh water. Through several interlocking stories, including the story of maritime commerce and the ships that move cargo through the inland waterway, Mysteries of the Great Lakes will take you on a journey through the greatest lake system in the world, and showcase the amazing geography, ecology, science, and history of the region through the most powerful film medium in the world - IMAX
