Guest speaker, Mary Marrs, RN,BA,MA from North Bay will be speaking on
her experiences in Brazil and Peru while volunteering as a nurse.

‘Friendship Morning’…celebrating 16th Year
The Penage Road Women’s Institute
‘Friendship Morning’ is celebrating its 16th
year. The Friendship Morning is an invitation for women of all ages who
would like to share some time enjoying guest speakers and entertainment,
to get together and have some fun. Topics in the past have covered
female entrepreneurs and their challenges, health related issues,
financial and family issues and many more. As well as guest speakers,
we always have an element of light entertainment. This year the
Fiddle Players and Dancers
from Chelmsford will perform.
Our 2011 ‘Friendship Morning’ will be held at the Beaver Lake Cultural
Centre on Hwy 17 west. Signs will be posted.
The ‘Friendship Morning’ starts at 9 am with coffee, tea and muffins and
concludes with a wonderful homemade-soup luncheon. The morning is
filled with prizes and fun.
Tickets cost $12 per person and are available by calling 866- 2145.

We are celebrating our 60th anniversary this year and would love to see

Institute, Whitefish - Sept 2008.
Hello everyone.
Welcome back after the summer break. Hope you all had a great time with
your families and friends.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, Sept 17th, at 7.00 PM at the
Penage Road Community Center. The program committee has set up a great
year ahead for us. New program books will be available for pickup along
with the first PR W.I. publicity brochure created for the recent "Doors
Open Sudbury" event. Roll call; provide an adjective; program = the WI
story; hostesses Ann K and Barbara S. Remember to bring a mug for coffee
and any interested friends/neighbours (just ask them) as new members and
guests are always welcome.
Our motto this month is "you don't stop laughing because you get old;
you get old because you stop laughing". So come out, enjoy the fun and

The Penage Rd Women’s Institute is in full support of keeping R.H Murray
Public School open.
Through the years our organization has supported our school by
fundraising and every year we give an award for a graduating student.
Our children have attended this school and it is a major part of our
community. It pulls our community together which is extremely important
in our rural setting .
The school is also used as a polling station and other events are held
in the school however the most important facts is we need this school
for our children.

Motion presented by Councillors Barbeau and Cimino,
WHEREAS there is a growing international movement to ban or discourage
the use of plastic bags because of their effect on the environment;
AND WHEREAS the production of plastic bags consumes natural resources
and energy and creates environmental pollution;
AND WHEREAS plastic bags, most of which are made of polyethylene which
takes up to 1,000 years to decompose, significantly add to the volume of
waste in the landfill sites, as well as create litter and choke marine
life;
AND WHEREAS approximately 4,680,0000,000 bags are used in Canada
annually;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of the City of Greater Sudbury
direct City of Greater Sudbury staff to promote the elimination of the
use of plastic bags within the operational requirements of the City of
Greater Sudbury;
AND FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City of Greater Sudbury Solid Waste
Section staff step up their efforts to educate the public about the
adverse effect of plastic bags on the environment and the fact that
plastic bags are recyclable in the City of Greater Sudbury;
AND FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of the City of Greater
Sudbury encourage Greater Sudbury retailers to reduce or eliminate the
use of plastic bags in their operations, and to promote the use of
reusable containers for carrying purchases.
AND FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of the City of Greater
Sudbury encourage the residents of Greater Sudbury to utilize reusable
containers rather than plastic bags for carrying their purchases and to
recycle whatever plastic bags they do obtain.
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED THAT a copy of this resolution be provided to the
Solid Waste Advisory Panel for their information, consideration and
input.
The
first women's Institute was started in 1897 in Stony Creek, Ontario. It
was a framework for flexible ,self-directed adult learning within a club
setting. The idea spread across Canada and around the world. On May 3rd
1947 5 women in Louise Township, the farming community south of
Whitefish, decided to start a Women's Institute here: The Penage Road
W.I. Soon more women from Lake Penage to Whitefish joined.
In those pre-health care days, health issues were
an early priority. the branch lobbied for the formation of a district
Health Unit. It was arranged to have a dentist visit the local
elementary schools and give the children a dental check and it
subsidized the needed dental work. It tried to arrange for a doctor or a
public health nurse to visit the schools, but was unsuccessful. Members
subscribed as a group to a commercial health insurance plan, covering
them selves and their families. Monthly meetings usually centred around
a speaker or informative program. Importantly, the W.I. gave a network
of friendly support to members.
After sixty years, changing with changing times,
the Penage Road Women's Institute still offers monthly meetings, adult
education, care for the community, and a circle of friends.
