Extended Hours for Open Gate at Lake Laurentian Conservation Area until Mid November

Volunteers with the newly formed Friends of Lake Laurentian will be volunteering to keep the gates open more

Hello everyone,

Just thought I would let all our members know that until mid-November or so, the Gate to the Nature Chalet on South Bay road will be open WEEKDAYS from 8:30am until 4pm, and WEEKENDS from 10am until 4pm!!

This gate is being opened by volunteers who are taking time out of their busy lives to ensure that we all have easy access to this beautiful part of our conservation land. PLEASE be sure that your vehicles are out of the lot by 4 pm, so the volunteer can close the gate at the appointed time.

I will notify our members when the gate will no longer be open.

Please be assured that through the newly formed Friends of Lake Laurentian, we are working on creating year round access for everyone!!

Kindest regards

Sheilah

Walden Cross Country Ski Club Athlete

…Named to National Development Centre!

The Walden Cross Country Fitness Club has been training young skiers for over 10 years and has experienced tremendous growth in both the size of its program and the success of its young racers.  This year, grade 12 Lo-Ellen Park student Alannah MacLean enjoyed a very successful ski season, competing for Ontario at the Canada Winter Games, winning a silver medal at the Eastern Canadian Championships and coming in third overall in her age category at the Canadian National Ski Championships.  Alannah has now been invited to attend the National Development Centre in Thunder Bay.  The National Development Centre provides elite young cross country skiers with intensive training and competition programs to develop their potential as future National Ski Team candidates.  Alannah will be heading to Thunder Bay this summer to start a new chapter in her dream to compete at the national level.

To help support training and travel costs for up and coming athletes like Alannah, the Club is holding their annual Giant Yard Sale and Barbeque on June 11 and 12th, 9 am to 2 pm, rain or shine.  The Sale will be inside the Club chalet, 6 Denis St. in Naughton.  Come out and support the Ski Club and its athletes – there’s always something for everyone!

The Rainbow Routes May Hike Club is this Saturday

Outstanding Citizens

Rob St. Marseille

Rob St. Marseille, president of the Walden Mountain Bike Club, was named the Mountain Bike Contributor of the Year 2010 by the Ontario Cup Association (OCA). This award is given for raising the profile of racing and recreational mountain biking in Ontario.

St. Marseille started building the Naughton cycling trails four years ago and has worked endlessly, improving and maintaining the trails. This summer, the Ontario Summer Games’ mountain bike races were held in Naughton. St. Marseille was responsible for co-ordinating the event, along with readying the trails, along with the help of volunteers.

While participating in races on the Ontario Cup circuit, St. Marseille, who is also an OPP officer and works for Crime Stoppers of Sudbury, “talks up” the Naughton trail system, and has drawn the attention of the OCA.
