Safer and Vital Communities Grant

The “Safer and Vital Communities Grant” encourages communities, business and government to work together, create integrated networks and build safer, healthier communities through social development.  This localized, partnership approach provides a targeted and multi-agency response to crime and delinquency in Ontario.

In keeping with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services (MCSCS) safer communities goal, the 2010/11 grant funding will target projects that focus on reducing and/or preventing crime in our communities through social development. This means that projects must demonstrate how they will address the root causes and/or risk factors associated with crime and violence among children and youth.  Application Form attached.

Healthy Communities Social Marketing
Approximately $300 has been offered to each CAN to come up with a tagline and product that they would like me to order. This project has to be completed by the end of July so I would need to know what your taglines are and what type of product falls within the specified budget by June 15th, 2010. A suggestion would be to have a few CANs order the same type of promotional item ( ie - stickers, magnets, banners) so that we could get a reduced rate when ordering in bulk. This is a limited time offer so make sure your groups are aware of this offer!! Sustainable Mobility Plan
On Wednesday June 16th a presentation on a Sustainable Mobility Plan for our city will be presented to City Council. The plan represents the input received from community sessions held throughout Greater Sudbury this past winter in the interests of making all parts of our city more friendly and accommodating to pedestrians and cyclists. The benefits to be gained from improvements of this nature will contribute significantly to healthy active lifestyles, environmental awareness, community safety and the attractiveness of our community as a tourism destination. All of these strongly support the Healthy Community Strategy and touch upon all 4 Heathy Community pillars which we have spoken about with CAN representatives at Summits and visioning sessions. We hope that you will consider coming out on June 16th to see the presentation and also to hear about the work which the Green Space Advisory has completed with the strong participation and support of many CAN members. Thanks and hope to see you on June 16th. Poster Attached.

In 2006, City Council created a Community Solutions Team to conduct extensive consultations as to how the newly formed City of Greater Sudbury might be more responsive to the needs of its citizens. Over a period of eight months, the Greater Sudbury Community Solutions team heard from approximately 700 citizens and had a series of working groups provide more detailed input on priority themes. Their final report, entitled "Constellation City: Building a Community of Communities in Greater Sudbury" was presented to Council in January 2007 and contained thirty-five recommendations.
One of those recommendations was that the City commits to an annual review of the recommendations over the four years of this term of Council, and that the review be made public. Attached, is a Chart which summarizes the recommendations from the Constellation City Report and for each, provides comments as to the status of the item.

Volunteers needed for the Ontario Health Study! 5,024 Ontarians have joined so far. WILL YOU?
The Ontario Health Study is a 20-year research project being undertaken by Cancer Care Ontario that began in the Spring of 2009. It is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for the purpose of identifying common factors of chronic diseases among Ontarians - including cancer, stroke, diabetes, glaucoma and osteoporosis, with a goal of learning more about the causes of chronic diseases and how to prevent them. There are currently 3 pilot project assessment centre locations in Ontario - in Mississauga, Owen Sound and Sudbury. The group is recruiting residents to look at their health status, family medical histories, work, community and living environment. This not-for-profit Study is one of several across the country that are following 300,000 Canadians for the next 20 years. Please help get the word out and encourage as many people as possible to participate in the Study. Who can participate? You can participate if you are a resident of Ontario between the ages of 35 and 69. You can also participate even if you don’t consider yourself to be in good health. Additional information can be found at www.ontariohealthstudy.ca by going to the ‘Your Visit’ tab and clicking on ‘Information Materials’. Call 1-866-606-0686 to book your appointment.
