Tips for driving in icy conditions
The Greater Sudbury Police Service has responded
to a number of motor
vehicle collisions
today. Here are some
reminders for driving in
winter conditions,
including freezing rain.
Reduce your speed
- Traction is reduced
therefore your speed
should be as well. Don't
be pressured by cars
behind you and don't
worry about being a
little late. Start your
trip earlier to account
for the extra time.
Increase your following
distance
-
Extra time may be
required to stop on icy
roads. Keep plenty of
distance from the
vehicle in front of you.
Brake more carefully
-
Too much pressure on the
brake may cause a skid.
With today's anti-lock
brakes, you don't pump
the brake pedal.
Maintain constant
pressure while braking
and you will have better
braking and steering
control.
Be wary of icy areas
- Slow down and be alert
when approaching areas
where ice forms more
readily - bridges,
overpasses and
intersections.
Drive in the ruts
- Traction is better in
the tracks made by tire
traffic. If you must
change lanes, move
slowly and smoothly.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service
reminds the public that
there are still numerous
complaints of theft from
vehicles being
reported. Though there
is no fool-proof method
of preventing theft from
vehicles, one thing is
certain - if the vehicle
is left unlocked, the
chances of becoming a
victim increase
dramatically. If there
are valuables in plain
view, individuals with
criminal intent will
target them.
If you want to keep it, secure it or stash it!
